Do we (youtubers) need to pay VAT?

Posting Mad!
Hi guys and gals!
Im wondering what is the story with VAT...
(as i understand its some kind of additional taxes which is added to sales/services (must pay when reach certain amount of money earned per year (variable amount, different in each country), in addition to the main taxes for the self-employed people)

Do we (youtubers, who earns from their channels) shall pay VAT too besides other taxes as self-employed? Or its advertisers are the ones who pays VAT when buys advertisements (advertisements, that shows on our channels, that are bought through Google Adwords)?

Thank you! : )

What you get from google it is your self employed income if it a personal account , if it is company account it is a different story. However this all varies a bit from country to country.

Hello, MostShockingEP,
Thanks for your reply.

Im partnered with Network and i get money from Network only (not from Google Adsense directly).
Just i pointed Google Adwords in my message, because all those ads still (if not all then vast majority) comes from Google Adwords and the advertisers buys ads through Google Adwords too, and as i understand those advertisers asked to fill (and pay probably) VAT numbers on their advertisers accounts on Google Adwords.

Hence is the confusion - does youtubers still needs to pay VAT, while advertisers already pay (?) VAT on their side when buying ads...

Are you EU based? I assume so.
Because the Google that pays out Adsense/ Adsense for Video earnings is based in Ireland you have no obligation to pay/ file for VAT in any EU country.

except... Ireland, in this case you will need to contact them only if operating as an incorporated business if not they do have a 13A file exemption meaning no VAT-claims are necessary on their side.
And none on yours because they are buying from you not the other way around.

(How it is phrased in their agreement, is that they will buy your impressions for 55% of their value) Hence paying you out 55% but a transaction did occur.

Pinging the old topic as its actual again :)

Hello @Shane, one concern has just popped... you mentioned Google Adsense is based on Ireland, but as i understand its just kind of branch of Google for europe?

But lots of major Networks are based in US - do they also getting payments from "Google Ireland" and not from Google in US ("Google Inc.")?

If so i truly wonder if the same rules apply to us regarding VAT, if payments are made not by Google Ireland but from Google in US ("Google Inc.")?

Thanks! :)

Google Ireland is Google's EMEA HQ (EU/Africa/Middle East) so that being said it would be their main office for Europe.

I'm not 100% sure on this but I believe so yes, the Irish Google office employs 1000s of people and they're all on sales/legal/payments rather than engineering/support as most Google offices are,
As I said, not fully sure but I think the YouTube agreement for monetization for not just MCNs but also for all channels not with an MCN states payouts will be handled by Google Ireland Ltd.

If so i truly wonder if the same rules apply to us regarding VAT, if payments are made not by Google Ireland but from Google in US ("Google Inc.")?
As I said before unless you are located in Ireland I am around 95% sure there is no VAT applicable, obviously that 5% depends on whether as I said above does the Irish office actually handle all YouTube payments, I can take a look and get back to you.[DOUBLEPOST=1423011223,1423010921][/DOUBLEPOST]Just checked, yes all payments are made from Google Ireland Ltd so you would not have to even think about VAT if US based :)

I really wonder why we need to pay TAX to be honest. I mean we pay money to YouTube 55% than we pay a cut to our networks and then on top of that we need to pay TAX what? I mean don’t we pay enough?

If I pay tax than there would ne nothing left for me to be honest so is this really true do we really need to pay TAX after so many cuts that we need to pay?
