Do paid ads really work?

I have heard that buying ads on youtube can really help to kick start a small channel when you are getting 0 views and 0 subscribers and i was wondering if buying like £10 worth of adverts be worth it seeing as all the ads i see i completely ignore. Especially seeing as i would like to get active subscribers not like sub for sub crap.
 
I've never tried it, but I've heard it usually brings in quite a lot of views but as far as subscribers who would come back it kind of depends if they advertise to the right people. It may get you a lot more views, but hard to say if it will get you subs who will keep coming back. I know like Facebook ads work if you pay to have a post advertised through a business page. My work's Facebook page usually gets like 200-300 views per post, but every once in a while corporate will let us "boost" a post and we end up getting 3000-4000 views on whatever post we advertise and then get more likes and comments on our page as well. I think it would work similarly to how well boosting on Facebook would. Or you could always make a Facebook page for your youtube and post a video and boost it on there to try it since I think it's slightly cheaper to try out since I know that works well. Sorry I can't be of more help!

In your case, right now, don't even consider it.

Your channel has a single 28 second video that tells the viewer what you're planning on doing. Almost no one is going to subscribe to that and it'd be very wasted money. Your first few videos will be ones that you look back at and get embarrassed by. You need to experiment and work out what works and what you enjoy, with the safety of a small audience.

Once you have a larger number of videos and you know which ones perform well (view rate, retention, subscription rate etc) then you might consider promoting the ones that clearly work. There is no point in promoting an empty channel though, and there is no point in promoting a bad video - it won't magically make it a good video.
 
I agree with Time Jacker...you shouldn't NEED ads to pick up from 0 subscribers. What you need to do is to start releasing content somewhat regularly, and then learn some of the basics about SEO so that your title, descriptions, and tags reinforce where your videos should be placed in the search. You should be aiming to get regularly daily traffic from search before you think about ads.
 
I've used it in the past in experimenting in other ways to get some attention for my videos. I only spent a dollar on each video I advertised. While it got me some views (~50 on each video) I didn't really see an uptick in traffic for the channel overall. I wouldn't recommend it until your channel is much bigger than it is right now, even then it might not even be worth it.
