Creating a Youtube Character? Good Idea?

AYRENvids

I need to stop caring too much.
So I've been thinking of creating a youtube character for a while now.
Got that idea from the whole Miranda Sings thing actually. Obviously my character would be different, I think maybe not even a female character. I don't know who exactly yet, or what they should be like or what their name should be, but I was just wondering what if I did something like that as well. Because as a character, I could act different, you know, and for example - I don't usually swear in my videos even when I sometimes want to. As the character, I could do that, because that wouldn't really be me, know what I mean?
Do you guys think it's a good idea? :)

It all depends upon whether you'd be able to live with knowing your not being who you really are on youtube. I believe that guy philip defranco uses philip defranco as his stage name and there's others who act and potray characters on youtube. It mainly all depends on what you want to get out of doing it and what you have to offer.

Careful. Sometimes YouTube "characters" become self-aware and go off and make their own channel.:(

A friend of mine has a crazy homeless character that he uses for skits.

One of my favorite youtubers has two characters he uses pretty often. One is a nerd rage nerd and the other is a derpy southerner.

I considered making a character, myself, that would be a bit self absorbed and think of themselves as a total bad ... forgot the rules on cursing on this forum but you get the idea.

Having a character would be cool, but I doubt I'd be able to keep it up for long. You would have to be a good actor and be able to hold your focus on the project (which is usually where my friend has trouble, but he is a great actor).

Characters are fun. It gives you more to work with. It's interesting to see your character develop and take a life of its own!

yeah i agree with josten all depends on the type of channel and what would be the goal accomplished from taking on that character. Also you would probably want to start a whole new channel for it so its really something you have to think about.

I think that would be a really good idea as long as not all of your videos are about the character so people actually know who you yourself are.

It would be like me and the character both on the channel. I would do my own stuff and I would bring the character in at times too, but people would know. And what I want to get out of it... I just want to have fun! :D I wanna try something I've never done before.

Why not give the character their own channel once they're known or even when they're not known? I mean, if you can do something totally ridiculous, a ridiculous character, and people would think it was for real, wouldn't that be kind of awesome even? Haha.

But it doesn't have to be like the character's there all the time, does it now? Also, I had kind of a similiar character idea actually. I've been thinking about it. My original idea was actually a male character but I wasn't sure how I could pull that off because of my voice, so now my new idea is a female character, but I think she would be sort of goth or something along those lines and she would have the "I don't give a damn" attitude at almost all times. And since I'm getting a new webcam soon (should be HD), I thought perhaps I can work with it somehow so I could even film some kind of movie-like clips with it, because one of my ideas was that this goth girl would be like my roommate and that we wouldn't like each other at all.

The whole idea came from the fact that I really like acting, but we don't have any acting classes or anything where I live, it's such a small place, so I thought why not do this on my own then? Why not create a character? Just for fun because I enjoy acting.
