Copyright on YouTube in 2025: Claims vs Strikes Explained (Beginners Must Know This!)

Hello creators,

One of the biggest traps for beginners isn’t thumbnails or monetization, it’s copyright. Many new channels get hit with claims or strikes without really understanding the difference. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Copyright Claim → This happens when someone owns part of your video (like music or footage). Your video stays up, but you might lose monetization or have ad revenue redirected to the copyright owner.
  • Copyright Strike → Much more serious. Three strikes means you loose your entire channel.
  • Fair Use Myth → Beginners often think “fair use” protects them. In reality, it’s a legal defense, not a guarantee. YouTube doesn’t decide fair use, courts do.
  • Content ID System → Automated detection that flags copyrighted material. Even short clips or background music can trigger it.
  • Legal Discussion → If you believe a claim is wrong, you can dispute it. But be careful: disputes can escalate into legal territory and you need to be confident you own the rights.
The hidden lesson: a claim affects your revenue, a strike threatens your channel. Knowing the difference is the first step to protecting your work.
