Add Gameplay, or No?

Our muitlshow geek culture channel Subtrendy has a weekly segment called The Gameswell Show where we talk about various topics related to video games. Typically, this is done in more of a talkshow format. However, we're considering holding the show while also streaming related gameplay. Typically we're hoping to do relatively simple co-op or vs games such as Castle Crashers. However, this week we specifically tried it with No Man's Sky.

I'm having a ton of trouble embedding these videos, so I'll post as links.

Here is an example of a typical past show.

And here is our newest try, with gameplay streaming during most of the episode:

Do you think the gameplay adds much to the experience, or does the show work mostly as a talkshow? Let me know, thanks!

I think its better you add gameplay if its related to what you talking about.

Hopefully this helps

Thanks for the input! I think we're going to try to do gameplay for a while now, it's visually more interesting.

Andrew's decided to switch the format of the show a little, too- from video game topics, to a video game talk show- in that it's basically just a talk show while we play video games. I think this is a little different than your suggestion of making the topics relevant, though.

Here's a little bit of an example:

I'm sure we have plenty of ways to go before we get the formula down, but we're hoping this is a step in the right direction.

I personally think the gameplay adds to the experience. I would maybe focus a bit on relative sizing of the live footage vs the gaming footage and perhaps put together either a background or border to perhaps better organize everything.

So would you suggest having our live footage larger or smaller?

I would say larger. Maybe do a quadrant style with the upper left quadrant being you two, the lower right quadrant being the gameplay, and then use one of the other quadrants to provide game/episode details and the final one to provide social media details (twitter, facebook, twitch, instagram, etc...). Pull that all together with a nice background/border and some solid design and I think you could have a really nice looking presentation.

i like a mixture of both, some gameplay, some just talking, because whenever your involved in gameplay sometimes the conversation is less fluid as people are trying to play a game

Yeah, that's definitely a problem that we're going to have to overcome. We've discussed having less structured topics, less complicated games, etc. I think we'd like to have gameplay the whole time, and to get genuine responses- but it is difficult. Any suggestions are welcome!

Hmmm, interesting. I'll bring that up with the team and see what they think. Thanks for the suggestion!

I really like "table top" on geek and sundry and "table flip" on game grumps so i would say yes if done well board games can be really fun to watch. You just need to do it in a way that is fun to watch and makes good content. This might involve multiple camera angles and a way to show the "action" in the game.

Figure out what works for you and have fun!
