i hear a lot of people joining networks and iv got no clue what that is about or for? In order to make money for yourself must you join a network? Any advise welcome

No, and as a matter of fact, you must be directly partnered with YouTube before you will be allowed to join a network. Once you do join a network, your earnings will be lower than they will with direct partnership as a rule.
First YouTube takes its cut; then the network takes its cut.
